Physiology of neuroactive peptides in vertebrate retina.

چکیده
ACh release but bicuculline markedly increased the spontaneous resting release, suggesting a tonic GABA-ergic input to the cholinergic amacrine cells (Cunningham & Neal, 1983). The GABA analogues muscimol and 3-APS also reduced the light-evoked release of ACh but were several thousand times more potent than GABA itself. The remarkably high relative potencies of the analogues might be due to the uptake processes for GABA in the retina.

Gestational diabetes influences retinal Muller cells in rat's offspring
Objective(s): The Muller cell is the principal glial cell of the vertebrate retina. The expression of Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the Muller cells was used as a cellular marker for retinal damage. This study was done to evaluate the effect of gestational diabetes on retinal Muller cells in rat's offspring. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 12 Wistar rat dams were ...
متن کاملDiversity of glutamate receptors in the mammalian retina
The main neurotransmitters in the vertebrate retina are glutamate, GABA and glycine. Their localization in the different cell types in the retina is well known. In addition, there exists a number of neuropeptides and other neuroactive substances that are only expressed by sparse populations of neurons. In recent years, molecular biology has led to the discovery of a rapidly increasing number of...
متن کاملFunctional mapping of somatostatin receptors in the retina: a review
The peptide somatostatin is one of many neuroactive agents that influence retinal physiology. It is synthesized primarily in a subclass of amacrine cells and believed to function as a neurotransmitter, neuromodulator or trophic factor. The cloning of the somatostatin receptors (sst1-5) in the early nineties provided the appropriate tools for the study of ssts in many tissues, including the reti...
متن کاملElectron Microscopic Study of the Vertebrate Retina
Morphological studies of the vertebrate retina with the use of the electron microscope have been carried out by several authors since 1949, most of them in relation to the structure of the receptors. These studies were devoted at first to the outer and inner segments of the receptors (1-8). More recently, the interest has been concentrated on the synaptic connections of the receptors (9-12). Th...
متن کاملCircadian biology: the physiology of inner retinal photoreceptors
Non-traditional photoreceptors detect overall irradiance in the vertebrate retina. Such cells in the mouse inner retina show increased intracellular Ca(2+) levels following illumination. Neurons in the outer retina of fish also display characteristics appropriate for an irradiance detector.
